Avoid the toxins in store-bought hand sanitizer spray and make your own in 3 minutes!
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a germ-a-phobe!
My fellow Seinfeld fans will appreciate this clip:
I even turned my oldest son into a germaphobe.
I can’t blame him really. I would put those grocery cart covers on when I took him to the store with me, I would make sure he washed their hands whenever we got home from a public place, and I would use hand sanitizer like it was going out of style.
But then a couple of years ago, I noticed that my husband, bless his heart, rarely washed his hands and always REFUSED to use any hand sanitizer. And get this? He was the least sick out of all of us.
Same thing goes for my middle son. He’s the same as my husband – hates washing hands all the time (even after he uses the bathroom – we’re working on that!) and doesn’t like the hand sanitizers. And guess what? He is the least sick out of all our kids!
It dawned on me that germs are actually a GOOD thing!
These days, we tend to oversanitize everything!
I was literally trying to make my home a hospital! And it never worked. We would still get sick all the time. I would buy those gross nice smelling hand sanitizers at the store and use them everytime I went out. But after doing some research about toxic chemicals, I decided to stop buying hand sanitizer and make my own!
**Let me just clarify – I’m not AGAINST washing hands, but we no longer use hand soap with harsh chemicals and disinfectants in them.
Here are the top 5 reasons I make my own:
- Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria – Heavy use of antibacterials, like Triclosan, can cause bacterial resistance, and I don’t want to contribute to that.
- Alcohol – Many hand sanitizer bottles contain 60-90% alcohol, which means if my kids drank it, it would be the equivalent to 4 shots of vodka!
- Good Bacteria – Just like antibiotics kill the good and bad gut bacteria, so do hand sanitizers. Believe it or not, good bacteria lives on our skin as well, which acts like a natural barrier. Conventional hand sanitizers kill the good bacteria.
- Might disrupt hormone balance – There are studies that have shown triclosan can interfere with thyroid hormones as well as other bodily functions.
- The environment suffers – When you wash your hands with antibacterial soap or conventional hand sanitizer/wipes they either go down the drain or into a landfill.
How to Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer Spray
Literally, this couldn’t be more simple! It took me two minutes to make.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- a glass spray bottle
- distilled water
- fractionated coconut oil
- 10 drops OnGuard essential oil blend
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
Why I’ve Chosen These Ingredients:
I love the fractionated coconut oil because it not only dilutes the oils, which is necessary for children, but it also adds a nice moisturing effect on your hands, unlike store-bought sanitizer which dries out your hands.
